Small Charity Week

Small Charity Week

It is the beginning of Small Charity Week (18th-23rd June).

Small Charity Week were set-up by the Foundation for Social Improvement (FSI) in 2010 to celebrate and raise the profile of the small charity sector. This week is organised with a series of activities to support and raise awareness of the hundreds and thousands of small charities that make a huge difference every day to vulnerable communities across the UK and the rest of the world.

The objectives of Small Charity Week are to:

·         Celebrate the contribution that small charities make to communities throughout the UK and across the world

·         Improve the knowledge, representation and sustainability of small charities

·         Highlight the work of the small charity sector to the broadest possible audience

·         Encourage public giving

·         Work with the small charity sector to develop political engagement at a national and local level

This is a good opportunity to reach out and find some key corporate sponsors. If you would like to sponsor or even just support local charity and training provider, St Edmunds Society, please get in touch. There are always options for sponsorship!

Continue promoting and engaging with your local small charities, they are what keep the clogs turning!

Shane’s Story

St Edmunds Society could not be prouder of its students. We have built a community here of strong young men and women that are building both confidence and their employability through meeting new people and gaining their industry-led qualifications. We could not be happier with their progress and one of our favourite things is knowing a student has grown as a person whilst working with us and our training centre.

In the video above you will be able to understand one of our Post-16 students and his theory on life at St-Eds. Shane is strong, independent and enthusiastic about his work.

It is these young people that get left out when it comes to job opportunities. Therefore, educational organisations have to push for their young people to gain the work experience. St Edmunds Society provides work experience for all post-16 students to enable them to gain quality knowledge and address any issues in the industry area.

Thanks to Norwich for Jobs for taking the time and speaking to our CEO, Lorraine Bliss, MBE and Shane.

Now, let us get these young people ready for work!

Thetford Soapbox Race

On Sunday our staff members tagged along to the #ThetfordSoapboxRace that was set by Thetford Town Council. We decided to enter the competition for our young students as they had already been working on motorcycles as part of our Transport Maintenance course. The team worked tirelessly with students to build the go kart and add promotional branding to it.

The day consisted of two timed races and one practice run. We didn’t have such high hopes from our practice run but with another member in tow we ended on 25 seconds for the go kart to begin up the hill from Market Square to the bottom next to Lloyds Bank. With the winners getting 21 seconds, we were not far off!

The day was made with some incredible music and food stalls and was a brilliant experience to speak with young people of Thetford, many of which we have as students.

We cannot wait to build an even better go kart next year with our students and come away winning the fastest kart!

Thanks to all involved in creating the event and well done to all winners!

Women in Engineering

According to the Women’s Engineering Society only 11% of the engineering workforce in the UK are female. The UK has the lowest percentage of female engineering professionals in Europe also.

There are many different sections of engineering:

·         Construction

·         Aerospace

·         Mechanics

·         Physics

·         Civil

Engineering is all around us. Engineers build our cars, houses, phones, roads, skyscrapers and so on. They are the reason for Earth’s success. As Roma Agrawal states:

“Engineering is an intrinsic and intimate part of our existence, shaping the spaces in which we reside. We cannot live without it”.

Many people ask the question ‘what is engineering?’. Watch the short video below to understand exactly how diverse the engineering industry really is.

A role model that St Edmunds Society has discovered for women wanting to get into the industry is Roma Agrawal. Roma is a Structural Engineer and STEM Promoter (she worked heavily on the Shard in London).

Roma is involved in structural engineering and has engineered skyscrapers. Take a look at the video from the BBC One Show on the wind effect of large, towering buildings.

Are you a male or female aged between 16-19 and interested in the world of engineering?

Why not start off and train with us on mechanical engineering with motorcycles. It would be an excellent progression route if you are wanting a career in any of the above industries.

Get in contact with us now on 01603 622035 or Amanda.bowie@st-eds.org.uk

Calling out to all employers!

St Edmunds Society acknowledges that work experience is key to the path of a successful career.

What use are qualifications if a student has not seen first-hand the kind of work they will be progressing to and had discussions with valuable professionals in that workforce?

Here at St-Eds we offer Post-16 students taking our courses the chance at work experience with many local businesses. We have a database of enthusiastic, motivated young people who are looking for the opportunity to showcase their abilities.

We will need you to support our learners to:

·         Build up their employability skills

·         Develop their social skills

·         Learn about your industry

·         Be an additional member of your team

In return, you may identify a young person that you feel able to offer employment, a traineeship or an apprenticeship to. If this is not possible, our young people will appreciate the experience you are able to offer and a reference in order to help support them to move forward with their career.

You will be helping the workforce of tomorrow!

If you feel able to help, please contact Amanda Bowie on 01603 622035 who can offer you more details.
