Charitable Support

Who are St Edmunds Society?

We are a charity which runs an approved and accredited Vocational Training centre, based in Norwich, supporting young people aged between 11-18 (or up to 25 with an EHCP). Many of these have struggled in or been excluded from mainstream education. Sadly, it is an inescapable fact that many of those concerned originate from disadvantaged families, often living in poverty. Poor educational attainment and poverty tend to be a desperately common link.

The opportunities and support we provide them helps to increase their self-esteem as well as develop their employment opportunities and genuine life prospects. Currently we are accommodating the needs of 100+ students a week, and we have an extensive waiting list. The problem has increased further due to the pandemic and enforced inactivity of young people, which perhaps gives an idea of the extent of a very worrying problem.

These sometimes ‘forgotten children’ are usually marginalised, often vulnerable and can at times be exploited and coerced into criminal exploitation. Many see themselves as failures, without any academic prowess and a disengagement with society through their lack of educational achievement.

The present ‘one size fits all’ education system does not take account of mixed or lower ability children, often writing them off at an early age, in-keeping with prescribed targets and statistics. No real account is taken of those who could very successfully occupy manual or mainstream employment such as construction workers, catering workers, beauticians, and mechanics, because success cannot always be measured by examination results.

As a charity, we receive no direct statutory funding or support, which is targeted solely towards traditional mainstream and Further Education and is not designed to recognise those who struggle or lack aspiration; of which there are many.

We believe there needs to be much more emphasis on opportunities for accredited Vocational Training, where young people are given the opportunity to gain support, skills, and qualifications, to enable them to have the tools to secure realistic (yet meaningful) employment and have a more positive future.

Our aim is to ensure that EVERY CHILD, regardless of their backgrounds receives the same opportunities as those who are more academically capable. Nationally, there are over 2 million young people living in poverty and socially excluded, and so ‘The Forgotten Children’ will soon become the ‘lost generation’ if mindsets are not altered to encompass a genuine workforce for the modern era.

Sadly, the problem of vulnerable and marginalised young people constantly goes unnoticed and unsupported, and we are left struggling to raise sufficient funding to deliver adequate alternative vocational education to those young people being left behind. If we, as just one charity based in Norfolk do not pick up these young people, then who will? They may become a drain on society, instead of being able to use their talents to contribute to the rebuilding of the economy and making a difference.

Voluntary donations, however small can make a real difference to us and our work. You can donate by visiting  www.paypal.com/gb/fundraiser/charity/3223483.

St Eds accredited to the matrix standard

St Edmunds Society Vocational Training Centre has yet again been accredited to the matrix Standard, demonstrating the high-quality Careers Information Advice and Guidance services we provide to young people.

The matrix Standard is the international quality standard for organisations that deliver information, advice and/or guidance (IAG), either as their sole purpose or as part of their service offering.

Roger Chapman, Head of the matrix Service for The Growth Company said:

“This is a fantastic achievement for St Eds and I would like to congratulate the team on their success. We believe that at the heart of high-quality advice and support services are strong leadership, excellent service and a focus on continuous improvement, all underpinned by effective use of the resources available.  The matrix Standard is designed to benchmark organisations against best practice in these areas. With their accreditation success, St Eds is working to provide the best possible support to their students.”

Remote Learning Statement

St Edmunds Society are fully committed to online learning and have invested significant time, energy and resources to ensure learners are able to access teaching and support during the periods they are unable to attend our Centres for face-to-face delivery. Our staff have been trained to deliver remote education as ‘face-to-face’ taught sessions in virtual classrooms, allowing learners to access learning as well as to maintain participation in their classes with their peers.

Remote education is not available to all learners across all our programmes.

For our Post-16 Learners:

As far as is possible, remote timetables reflect the delivery schedule learners would follow if attending the centre for face-to-face sessions. Classes are delivered live via Microsoft Teams by their Tutors and in their usual teaching groups. Following a live delivery session, learners will be set work to complete and submit. During completion of the independent work, Tutors will provide support to individual learners and check on their progress. Should the usual tutor not be available to deliver a scheduled session, we may take the step of merging online classes to provide cover and continuity for all learners. Learners are required to fully attend and engage with their weekly sessions.

All learners on these programmes are also able to access 1-2-1 support and workshops from our centre support team with a focus on wellbeing, careers guidance, and engagement. Supporting staff will ensure all learners with SEND and vulnerable learners receive additional ‘keep in touch’ calls each week. Learners are to highlight any electronic access requirements or connectivity issues to staff who will look to support where possible.

All work produced online is assessed and retained to be used to support any potential Centre Assessed Grades which may be required as the year progresses. Mock assessments are also undertaken to monitor learner progress and identify areas for development and additional support. We are maintaining communication with our examining and awarding bodies with regards to planned formal assessment and how this will be implemented. Further updates will be given to learners and updated on our website as we gain confirmation.

For our School Learners:

Currently St Edmunds Society is unable to offer support to these learners remotely. However, the learners’ school will be supporting them during this time. We will offer support with paper packs where required. There are links to online welfare support services available on our website and the Padlet app.

COVID-19

Coronavirus Update – January 2021

St Edmunds Society Training Centre is currently close, in line with the current Government lockdown. We will remain closed until lockdown restrictions are eased for education, but we expect this to last until at least February half term.

We will continue to follow advice and guidance and keep you informed on social media and our website, sending further updates when we are able.

Post-16 students, you will be supported with theory work to complete online, so that you can continue working towards your qualification.

All students will be receiving a letter with more information, and will be contacted by St Edmunds Society staff shortly.

If you have any questions, you can contact Amanda (Study Programme Manager) on 07702 897596.

Thank you for your continued support and understanding.

“Mystery entrepreneur donates £10k to charity that helped when he was homeless”

Our training centre in Oak Street specialises in alternative education, meaningful qualifications and a path to employment for those who were less than well served by the traditional education system.

The charity was founded in 1965 and began as an accommodation project to support homeless young men under 24, but in 2012 the emphasis shifted towards alleviating a primary cause of youth homelessness; a lack of educational attainment and qualifications.

Not directly funded by the government, we rely on the generosity of the public and coronavirus has seen a big rise in the number of young people being referred.

Now a successful local entrepreneur, who prefers to remain anonymous, has stepped in to donate £10,000. The donor passed through our doors a decade ago, and he recently got in contact out of the blue.

Lorraine Bliss MBE, CEO of St Eds said:

“He had found himself in need of St Eds’ aid as a young man with seemingly nowhere to go and no opportunities to further himself. We provided him with accommodation and support, but also the opportunity to reappraise his life and be proud to make something of the talents he had.

After St Eds helped him get the start he needed, he went on to launch a successful media business, and today is the head of a thriving national company. Although he was able to completely transform his life through hard work and application, he had not forgotten what St Eds did for him and countless others. His donation will be invaluable at a time when St Eds’ work is needed more than ever.”

Thank you so much, this donation will be invaluable at a time when our work is needed more than ever to support young people.
